Getting Around
Moving around Abuja is not too difficult as the roads are good and traffic is hardly a problem (excluding early Monday mornings, best avoid it). You can easily hire a taxi through the use of a transport app called Bolt, as this is the best way to move around since there is no public transport like trains and only little buses. To fully engage in the Nigerian culture learning pidgins and slangs is advisable as it is the best way to converse with a Nigerian you meet on your trip. Pidgin is an English-based creole language and Nigeria’s real lingua franca. English might be the official language, but in a country with well over 250 other local languages, Pidgin was developed to aid communication among people from different parts of the country, as well as between locals and Europeans. These are some Nigerian slangs that will help you on your trip, “How far” this statement is not asking where you are going or how long it will take you to get there but it simply means “how is everything” it is an informal greeting between Nigerians. “No wahala” is a pidgin expression best used for confirmation or approval, when used it either means “yes” or “no problem” depending on the context of the conversation while the “wahala” means there is a problem or used when you want to say no or there is a problem. while in a taxi when you are about to reach your destination or someone is pouring you a drink the pidgin expression ” E don do” is very helpful as it means “stop” or “it is enough or okay”.
