Kihei, Maui
Are you looking to go on a family vacation to Hawaii but have no idea where to go? Hawaii has many beautiful islands and cities to choose from, which can make planning a vacation overwhelming. Here is why Maui why Kihei, Maui is the best place for you and your family when visiting Hawaii. Kihei brings a more small town feel that allows you to interact with the locals and all they have to offer. While travelling around with my family, we met many locals who welcomed us with open arms onto their land.
There are lots of activities to keep your family happy and busy on the island. There truly is something for everyone! Kids and parents alike can enjoy surfing lessons, snorkelling, boat rides, exploring the local shops and markets, which give you a glimpse of local foods and culture, the winding but beautiful road to Hanna, and beach days at various locations such as the black sand beach. No matter if you have little ones or teenagers like my sister and I when we went, Maui is a place for every type of family.
What to do: some family friendly daily activities
- Surfing lessons at Maui Wave Riders https://www.mauiwaveriders.com/
- Road to Hanna drive
- Snorkelling
- See the local shops
- Beach days
- Shaved Ice (snow cones)
Tips for your stay:
Transportation
Rent a car right from the airport. There are several vehicle rental companies to choose from to best accommodate you and your family’s specific needs. Since Kihei is small yet spread out, a rental car is the easiest way to get from one adventure to another during your stay. Whether it’s taking the road to Hanna, or a beach day, a car is a must.
Where to eat
If you decide to stay in Maui, here are 3 top places to try out:
- Nalu’s South Shore Grill https://naluskihei.com/
- The Dirty Monkey in Lahaina https://thedirtymonkey.com/
- Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice – Kihei http://www.ululanishawaiianshaveice.com/
Where to stay
There are multiple hotels to stay at along the main road through Kihei. There are places on both the outskirts and in the central city part of Kihei. Lahaina is another great area to stay, even if you are looking to spend most of your time in Kihei. However, if Lahaina is too busy, I recommend staying on the outskirts of Kihei at a hotel called Sugar Beach Resort, where my family and I stayed. It is an apartment style resort with both an outdoor pool and access right to the ocean from the resort. There is also a cute diner in the common pool area with amazing food that you can eat in or dine out right by the beach.
A bit about me (the author)
I (Katie) am originally from Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, but moved to Kamloops for university. I love to travel with my family and explore new places with them. I went on my own family vacation to Kihei, Maui, Hawaii back in 2019 as a celebration for all that happened in our lives that year. It was the best vacation ever!
