Kamloops is no stranger to outdoor activities, and there is no easier way to enjoy nature than to walk through it! There are tons of trails both in and around Kamloops, so it can be a bit daunting to find “the perfect hike” for your family. But don’t worry, below you can find 5 hikes that are easy, fun, and full of great views!

1. Panorama Trail Loop

First on the list is the Panorama trail loop of Kenna Cartwright Park. This rugged dirt trail is perfect for families looking for something that will kill an hour, have no tough sections, and will offer some beautiful views of the Kamloops landscape (hence the name). And if you have a furry member of the family, you can let them roam leashless! Be aware of the cacti though…

2. Story Trail

The second trail in this list is called Story Trail and, while an hour away from Kamloops, is very unique. Located in the Tsútswecw (pronouced choo-chwek) Provincial Park, Story trail offers you to listen to Indigenous youth while learning about the plants and wildlife, as well as hearing the Secwépemctsin (also called Shuswap) language! This is done through posts with QR codes to scan with your cell phone while you follow the loop. And because we can’t forget about the furry members of the family, this trail does allow dogs with leashes.

Length: 2km

Duration: 1 hour

Dogs? Yes, on leash

3. Battle Bluff

For families looking for more of a challenge in their hike, Battle Bluff Trail may fit the bill. While this nearly 5km trail is pretty exposed to the elements, it also offers some of the best views of Kamloops Lake. Just about a 30 minute drive outside of town, Battle Bluff trail will have you huffing and puffing with excitement. Most importantly, dogs are allowed! Just make sure everybody has plenty of water.

4. Isobel Lake Interpretive Trail

Next on the list is the Isobel Lake Interpretive trail, a 3.2km pinetree-covered trail that loops around a stunning reflective lake and totally worth the 40 minute drive north from Kamloops. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout for fishing and a covered picnic area to enjoy. The best part is that you can bring your dog (they must be leashed)!

5. McArthur island loop

Last on the list is the McArthur Island loop trail. This is likely one of the easiest-going trails on the list, with a fully paved 3km loop that follows the Thompson River. While on this trail, there are multiple activities for your family to enjoy. There is a playground for the kids, a skatepark for the older kids, and outdoor exercise equipment for you to try out. There’s even a free mini golf course! Just remember, you have to supply your own putters and balls. Sadly this park does not allow your furry family members to join you.

I am a Texan transplant and hiking enthusiast above all else. I have thru-hiked Iceland, thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, led multi-week backpacking trips through northern New Mexico and Colorado, hiked across the Grand Tetons 3 times so far, and I have a really adorable 10 year old puppy named Bailey.
