The Tournament Capital Centre is one of the largest sports training facilities in Canada. The TCC is located next to the Thompson Rivers University’s campus. It hosts over 100 tournaments each year and is home to a range of professional athletes, including Dylan Armstrong, Nancy Greene Raine, and Catharine Pendrel. The TCC is the premier host for tournaments and national/international competitions, with over $37 million invested in enhancing the sporting facility. The city of Kamloops has sanctioned sports tourism as an economic generator and has made the Tournament Capital Program one of the top priorities in the City Council’s Strategic Plan. Kamloops has hosted an average of around 110 sporting events per year, with about 30,000 people coming to the city to participate and contribute to a direct community spending close to $13 million annually. Kamloops has recognized the benefits of commercializing their city as an athletic-oriented community, resulting in increased participation, economic generation of sports tourism, and first-class facilities.

What The TCC Offers:

The Tournament Capital Centre offers a variety of sports, including basketball, volleyball, track, and even aquatics. The main gym is called “The Fieldhouse” and consists of an indoor 6 lane, 200-metre Olympic-standard Mondo track surrounding three NBA size basketball courts. This also includes an electronic score clock, 6 dressing rooms, and a custom-designed indoor throws room. The Canada Games Pool is neighbouring the Fieldhouse with a leisure pool, lane pool, and tots pool. They even have two hot tubs and a sauna for public usage. On the second floor, 8,000 square feet of space is designated for athletes performing for gold. It is a safe, friendly environment so you can feel comfortable working out with the top-of-the-line workout facilities. It is available for first-time gym-goers to international gold medalists.

Staying In Shape as A Student:

Between balancing your academic priorities, work, and social life, staying in shape can easily slip to the bottom of the priority list for many post-secondary students. Adults are recommended to do at least 150 minutes of physical activity every day. However, that is very unlikely for the average adult. Students should try to fit some form of physical activity in their daily routine, even if it’s a game of basketball at the Fieldhouse or a few laps around the track, exercise has been proven to reduce the cause of stress and improve your mental health. The stress of school and exams tend to fluctuate our weight. Getting exercise is a beneficial habit to keep up your metabolism other than just sitting at your desk studying for hours. As a student, overwhelming school assignments can take a huge toll on your mental health but by incorporating some sort of physical activity, you can maintain a well-balanced lifestyle.

TCC Membership:

Full access gym memberships are $32.40 a month for TRU students. That includes access to the track, gym, and free swimming with a valid U-pass scan. If you are not a TRU student, admission is $53.25 a month for ages 19-59. That consists of access to the gym, indoor track, and the Canada Games Aquatic Centre. To sign up for a pass, go to https://cityofkamloops.perfectmind.com/SocialSite/MemberRegistration/MemberSignIn?returnUrl=%2FSocialSite or you can sign up at the front desk.
