September 4, 2018: Our Adventure Begins

Orientation day. The start to the adventure that is University. The start to our Nightmare for the next 3 months.

Today is the day that we get to explore campus and figure out where everything is. My roommate, Rebecca, and I decided to walk over to Thompson Rivers University at 8 am to join our tour group. Our group met by the basketball court by Old Main. We were excited to take this tour because it was specific for International students and we wanted to take the opportunity to make new friends. My previous year I was at University in Vietnam and I never got to experience the international student lifestyle, so I am excited to see what TRU’s campus has to offer.

Our tour guide was a Future Student Ambassador at TRU. To begin, she took us on a tour of all the support services for international students! She showed us the international academic advisors’ in the House of Learning, the international student advisors’ in the International Building, and then she showed us the LEAP desk that is also located in the International Building. LEAP stands for Leisure Exploration Activity Program, which is a place that offers students opportunities to see the Kamloops area and do various activities. Some activities that have been offered were skiing up at Harper Mountain, Wine tours for those of legal age, and going fishing! Rebecca and I are very excited to try out these activities!

Next, she showed us the Wellness Center. This place was pretty cool. It is a place where you can go hangout on the bean bag chairs, or make some tea, and talk to a wellness counselor if you need some guidance. Bonus for the girls, they offer free menstruation products! We will be coming here to hangout during our breaks between classes!

After that she went around and showed us all of the food/café places! Wow, there were so many to choose from! To name a few, there is the Den, Bento Sushi, the Scratch café, Tim Hortons, the Deli in OM, Starbucks, etc. There were also various coffee spots around campus! Those will definitely help us survive midterms! We will include some various photos of these restaurants to give you a taste!

In conclusion, we think TRU is a really cool campus! It has so much to offer an International Student and so many places to find help. The LEAP desk is a very good addition to campus and we applaud TRU for that. We are looking forward to trying all of the restaurants, and going adventuring with LEAP, so we will be sure to keep you updated on that! Stay tuned for our next post! Ciao!
